Why Bleeding In The Brain Is So Dangerous
One of the most serious injuries an accident victim can suffer is hematoma, or bleeding in the brain. This injury is potentially fatal, and even those who survive could suffer permanent disabilities. All brain injuries are serious, but bleeding inside the skull carries added dangers. Our Ocala brain injury lawyers help accident victims who are struggling to overcome the effects of these injuries. Bleeding Can Kill Brain Cells
Your brain does not store oxygen. Instead, it receives a steady supply via blood vessels. Unfortunately, if these vessels are damaged in an accident, then the brain will not receive enough oxygen and brain cells will begin to die. In fact, brain cells begin to die off in as little as three minutes without oxygen.
You can suffer bleeding within the brain itself, or between the membranes in between the brain and the skull. Either way, pooled blood can begin to put pressure on the brain. There is nowhere for the blood to go, so the pressure builds quickly. Ultimately, this pressure can cut off oxygen to some or all of the brain as well. For this reason, any injury to the layers on top of the brain (called the meninges) is as equally as serious as bleeding in the brain itself.
You Can’t Easily Detect Bleeding Inside the Skull
If you bleed from your nose, you’ll know it as soon as it starts running down your lip. Unfortunately, blood can build up rapidly inside your skull and you will have no way of knowing it.
That’s why it is vital to pay close attention to your symptoms after a fall or other accident. Signs you might be suffering an intracranial hemorrhage include:
- Severe, sudden headaches
- Vomiting
- Confusion
- Loss of balance
- Loss of coordination
- Sudden blindness or difficulty seeing
- Weakness or numbness in a limb or on one side of the body
- Difficulty talking or slurred speech
- Confusion
Immediately go to the hospital if you notice any of these symptoms following an accident. A doctor can perform an imaging test to diagnose you.
Brain Cells Don’t Regenerate
Once cells die, they don’t come back. This means that you can lose the ability to do certain things, depending on where the damage occurred. Some people will suffer permanent physical, speech, or mental disabilities.
Rehabilitation can help somewhat. You might regain the ability to walk or relearn how to talk and get dressed on your own. However, it’s also possible you might suffer from permanent limitations and could even be confined definitely to a nursing home or similar long-term care facility.
